ABOUT Sheryl Y. Starke

As a biologist, Sheryl Y. Starke has worked in different areas in Suriname conducting baseline and monitoring research. Her specialization ranges from terrestrial entomology to knowledge of the various mammals of Suriname and its diverse ecosystems in general. In addition to research, she has trained and educated focus groups, mainly on biodiversity and various environmental threats.

Now, as a PhD researcher at Wageningen University, she conducts research focusing on sustainable wildlife management near Indigenous villages. This work aims to bridge the gap between ecological data and social policy, ensuring that conservation efforts are both scientifically sound and socially equitable. By integrating wildlife ecology with community dynamics, the project seeks to foster a balance between biodiversity conservation and the livelihood needs of local populations.
